Challenges
A North American national railway company operating in 22 states with an on-premises IT environment of over 5021 virtual machines faced several challenges in managing its IT infrastructure and planning a migration to the cloud. They had limited visibility into their IT estate and their applications across their environment. They were subject to strict industry regulations, complicating their cloud migration efforts.
Facing the rapidly increased license and support costs for their VMware environment, they needed a TCO for migrating to AWS, insights into potential VMware migration pathways, application service mapping, Microsoft SQL cost reductions, and potential OS and application end of life risks they faced.
Solution
To address these challenges, CloudSphere ran an assessment for migration and modernization with its platform. Deployed across the entire IT estate, this discovery delivered an optimized total cost of ownership in AWS and business applications services paths for migration move groups.
Results
- Discovered more than 15,571 COTS and propriety applications across Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Linux, UNIX, VMware, Nutanix, and AIX workloads for migration planning.
- Provided application complexity scoring and service paths for migration move group planning in the CloudSphere Knowledge Graph.
- Reduced security risks by identifying 563 operating systems that were past EOL date.
- Identified reduction of MS SQL Enterprise core counts by 39% with an estimated license cost reduction of 40%.
- Results included 57% annual cost reduction TCO by opting for a 3-year reserved instance and right-sizing their virtual machines in AWS.
By leveraging CloudSphere’s platform, this national railway company successfully addressed its complex IT challenges by not only accelerating the migration planning with their consulting partner with CloudSphere’s Knowledge Graph but also uncovering significant cost-saving opportunities and reduced risk to drive a successful cloud migration with CloudSphere and AWS.
